I kid you not. This is not lore. This is straight from the source:

Growing up, Tony Horton preferred fast food to his mother’s healthy home cooking. Tony wasn’t always Bringing It. Born in Westley, RI, and raised in Trumbull, CT, Tony preferred fast food to his mom’s cooking, hated exercising, and didn’t particularly like sports. He describes himself then as the “quintessential 98-pound weakling.” Having moved to Hollywood to pursue his dream of acting, Tony realized he had to get fit to succeed. He joined the renowned World Gym in Venice, California, where Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno worked out. With friends and acquaintances blown away by his physical transformation, it wasn’t long before Tony’s career as a sought-after fitness trainer began, and programs like P90X and Power 90 came to fruition.

No. Unequivocally no. P90X is a professionally produced workout DVD that is unquestionably effective and when used as intended it produces guaranteed results.

But instead of just ending the post there, I would like to address the issue of Beachbody scams, since P90X is produced by BeachBody. Before I begin, let me just say that I don’t work for Beachbody, a relative or friend of mine does not work for Beachbody, I don’t know Carl Daikeler or anybody else at Beachbody.  The reason that I care what you think about Beachbody is because I am a Sagitarius and I always want the truth to be told, so let’s get going.

Beachbody and Carl Daikeler are trying to change the pitiful state of our health and fitness in this country by selling fitness products that include workout DVD’s like P90X and Hip Hop Abs, workout accessories like chin up bars and resistance bands and supplements like recovery drinks and meal replacement shakes. There are many, many companies doing the same thing - some good and some bad. No one would disagree that Beachbody sells good products. Beachbody also has an online fitness club, which is unique and excellent by the way, that has perhaps 500,000 members. And finally, Beachbody runs infomercials that you see on the weekends if you are flipping channels. If there are any complaints, they stem from the operators who answer the 800 numbers that appear in the commercials. Whether it is a handful of operators which is most likely since in every company, organization, etc. there are always a few bad apples or systemic I don’t know, but apparently some people have gotten annoyed because the operators are trying to upsell them. That means if you order a workout DVD, they might suggest resistance bands to go with it or a recovery drink for after your workout. Every retailer does that. One issue that arises, however, is the option to purchase supplements on Home Direct. That means that if you buy a thirty day supply of a vitamin, it will automatically be sent to you again in 30 days and you will be billed every thirty days. If you choose that option and then get a charge on your account that you forgot you agreed to, then, yes, I am sure that you would complain, but did Beachbody make you agree to something that you didn’t want to?

Finally, the online fitness club comes with a 30 day free trial. After that, you are billed $2.99 a week for three months in advance and again every three months if you continue to be a member. Can you imagine billing half a million people for $2.99 every week? That would be absurd. You get a free month. If you want to continue, you are billed for the next three months in advance (about $40.00) and then again in three months, but only if you want to continue. If you don’t want to continue in the club and you forget to tell Beachbody, well, you are automatically billed and all you have to do is tell them and they will reverse the charge. If you choose to complain about the charge, then that is your right and that is why some people think that Beachbody is a scam.

What happens when people complain and it gets on the Internet? You type “Beachbody scam” in Google and sites like www.infomercialscams.com appear and people have the opportunity to voice their complaints. And even if the issues have been addressed by the company and individuals reprimanded if that was necessary, the complaints will stay on the Internet probably forever. That is the truth and that is all that I care to address. Otherwise, you can think what you want about Beachbody, but you won’t find a company trying harder to sell products that will improve your health and fitness and doing it with all good intentions.

You bet! And again, I am not a fitness guru or one of those guys who rides his bike across the country or runs 63 marathons in 63 days. I am an older runner (you know, those skinny types) of average build and no exceptional genes. But, five mornings a week, I do P90X. You can call it going to class with Tony Horton as the teacher and different students in each of the 12 different “classes” or going to the “gym” and working out with Tony Horton and his friends. Either way, the workout DVD route to fitness coupled with the fact that I am working out in the comfort of my own home, is the optimum way for me to enhance and maintain a high level of fitness. In fact, working out at home gives me the opportunity to multi-task and since I work out in the same room as my computer, I can pause P90X if necessary and check and answer customer emails. It also means that my workout time is very compact and efficient because there is no getting dressed for the weather, no drive to the gym and no excuses, since whatever else I might need to do in the time that I am working out (like one of my girls waking up early and wanting Dad time) I can do and still get in a complete workout.

So, yes, P90X is fun and coupled with the fact that it is a complete fitness and nutrition plan, I am blessed to be able to benefit from the opportunity it provides me to optimize my health and fitness while at the same time saving money on gym memberships and adding a lot more minutes to my day.

You can expect to be challenged and you can expect results. If you are considering buying P90X or have already purchased it, you had a goal in mind. P90X is an investment in fitness and health that will make you stronger, lower your body fat, guide you to eating better to fuel your workouts and eating just enough to fuel your lifestyle. You will also be guided in your workouts, so that you know what workouts to do on any given day. Each workout DVD consists of a warm up, stretch and then a workout. You will need resistance bands or free weights and a chin up bar (or you can do each chin up or pull up exercise with a resistance band and the technique with the band is fully demonstrated). You don’t need anything else except some floor space in front of a TV and DVD player or you can put the DVD in your computer if it has a DVD drive. Finally, you can expect to get a lot of support and guidance if you choose to become a Million Dollar Body Club member and taking advantage of all of the information that is available including: Thin Kitchen cooking videos, the Transformation Tracker, your own Diary, Fitness Tips and Articles, WOWY Online Gym, access to Trainers and Experts, Message Boards and Chat Rooms and best of all, you are assigned a Million Dollar Body Club Coach who can answer your questions, motivate you and even give you a shoulder to cry on when you need one! These Million Dollar Body Club member resources provide information, tips, advice, peer support and camaraderie

You should not expect P90X to be easy and you should not expect to get results if you are inconsistent with the workouts, do not follow the nutrition guide and eat just to fuel your workouts and daily activities or lead a lifestyle that is inconsistent with success in achieving your goal of improving your fitness and overall health.

In addition to the post entitled, “Is P90X For You” I would like to offer my opinion as an older athlete with experience as a personal trainer and running coach. I would definitely read what it says and take the test to make sure that you are purchasing the right workout DVD and fitness plan for you. P90X is a real workout, with a real nutrition program that will both fuel your workouts and your goals - whether they are to get stronger and bigger or to lose weight and to get leaner. You won’t see P90X in WalMart and it is not for everyone. If you are obese, please choose another workout DVD from the selection that I provide. If you are older and have never worked out and are looking for something basic and not challenging, again, go to the list of workout programs and select one that best suits you, your current fitness and your fitness personality.

But if I can do P90X, then most other people can, too. In a couple of weeks, I will be 57 and although I run and years ago, I was a personal trainer, that doesn’t mean that I am some super fit freak who can just stand in front of a DVD player and whip out these workouts any more than I could win a marathon. But I look forward every morning to doing my workout and getting stronger and using that strength in all of my daily activities and my running.

Men and women, young and old can do P90X just like they could do another sport or activity if they put their mind to it. Any of the groups, for instance, who offer workouts for marathons, like Team in Training, don’t expect you to be able to run a marathon the day that you join. It is the goal of those that participate, just like doing all of the P90X workouts can be your goal. I didn’t start out by doing every minute of every workout and no one says that you have to (although if you expect results in 90 days, you need to do more than dabble in the workouts and be inconsistent in doing them). I started by doing portions of each workout before I went for a run. My second time doing P90X, which started on November 12 (I stopped doing P90X the first time at the end of August to focus more on my running), I am doing my P90X workout in the early morning and then running in the afternoon and it is going great.

Who can do P90X ? You can. Just like most people can run a 5K or ride a bike a certain distance, it is a matter of doing the workouts appropriately and building up over time with progressive adaption to train your body and prepare it for doing the activity, sport or event that you are training for. And if you are obese or sedentary, start with a different workout, lose weight, get in shape and you, too, will be able to do P90X eventually. It is the ultimate workout and worth making it a goal for just about everyone.

If you are in decent shape, and you have the drive to get exceptionally fit while you scorch those stubborn last pounds of fat off your body, then yes . . . P90X is not just for you, P90X wants you!

Granted, this program is not for everyone—it’s for the rare breed that wants to see what’s possible with 90 days of real training. You don’t have to be an athlete or a bodybuilder. You just have to have the will to “Bring It” for 90 days.

Based on customer feedback, you’ll love this program even more than you think you will. And in 90 days—whether you want to show off your body at the beach, or improve your strength, stamina, and coordination to compete in your field of play—the results will absolutely blow you away (they always do, every time).

The Fit Test

Before starting an extreme fitness program like P90X, it’s important to know where you stand and if your current fitness level is adequate. Providing an honest assessment of your abilities and your mindset will allow you to take advantage of your strengths and overcome your weaknesses.

P90X® Test Group takes the Fitness Test. Watch the movie...It’s in your best interest to have completed the equivalent of Power 90® or Slim in 6® before you begin. But if you’re unfamiliar with these programs, we’ve set some guidelines for you to follow. If you are unable to perform the minimum requirements (listed below each exercise), you’ll see better results by doing another fitness program before you take on P90X. So if you can’t finish the Fit Test, do Power 90. You’ll get great results, and then be able to come back and crush P90X!

The P90X Fit Test takes approximately 40 minutes to complete. Be sure to consecutively perform all the exercises in the order they appear. Keep up with the timing, and make a note if you do anything differently. Pay attention, and be honest with yourself.

What you will need to take the Fit Test:

  • Heart rate monitor
  • Tape measure
  • Partner to help record data (optional)
  • Pull-up bar
  • Timer (stopwatch or watch with second hand)
  • Running shoes
  • Towel
  • Water
  • Your “Bring It” game face

It never occurred to me that at 56, P90X would be something that I couldn’t do. As a runner for over 40 years, physical challenges were never daunting, but merely required more training to accomplish them if at first I didn’t succeed. As a Million Dollar Body Coach, I knew that P90X was our “top of the line” product and so I purchased it, without knowing anything about it or even knowing that there was a Fit Test that you could take to determine whether you were up for the particular physical challenges that P90X provided. The price of $119.85 was never an issue because it is a 12 DVD set and there is a nutrition guide and fitness plan, so it seemed like a complete package. And anyway, as an ACE Certified Personal Trainer for many, many years, I had never purchased a workout DVD because I was the one creating my own workouts for my clients.

When the package arrived, I was at first struck by how professionally it was packaged (even a scene from one of the workouts is depicted inside the box), so I knew that the company was putting forth a lot of effort. The nutrition guide is actually a book and is not only a diet plan, but also provides delicious recipes which I have since tried and enjoyed. The fitness plan tells you what workouts to do on which days and you also have another option, which is to follow the plan which is created for you in WOWY. You have to remember that in March of this year when I purchased P90X, I was still learning about Million Dollar Body and WOWY and its enormous potential to direct you to achieving your fitness goals and to motivate you every step of the way, so I really hadn’t used WOWY much. I soon learned that anyone can log into WOWY and all that they need to do is be a Million Dollar Body Club member, which provides you with the most resources and guidance or just become a guest or “free player” which gives you full access WOWY (or, of course, you can log in as a coach, which I am). In all cases, once you log into WOWY, you can put in the workout DVD that you are doing and it creates a plan for you to follow and each time that you log in, you know which of the 12 (in the case of P90X) workouts that you are doing.

So, on March 28, 2007, I began using P90X workouts, loving them in every sense of the word and advocating them to a broad spectrum of people who are more physically able that they thought and who, with the help of P90X could create bodies that are significantly more capable of accomplishing every day tasks, stronger and visually more appealing. I now had a means to accomplish my own fitness goals and a way of further promoting the benefits of a fit and healthy lifestyle.

History of Howtobefit.com - My Untold Story

I am now telling my story for the first time for the sole purpose of trying to help others know that with will and perseverance you can achieve your fitness and health goals.

Prior to May 1985, I was super fit and super healthy, routinely running between 50 and 70 miles a week. Between March 16th and May 5th 1985, I ran 34:32 for 10K, 57:46 for 10 miles, 53:20 for 15K, 27:38 for 5 miles and 16:26 for 5K. I was 34 years old. On May 17, 1985, at around 5:00 pm on a Friday night, I was driving home with my then five year old daughter and we hit a van broadside. The van had been stopped in the left lane of a four lane road with its left blinker on and unexpectedly made a right turn out of the left lane directly in front of us. That accident, although we both survived, in an instant, ruined my health and changed my life. On Sunday, May 19th, I ran the Midland Run 15K (which I eventually ran or tried to run 13 years in a row) and ran 53:03.

The next day, Monday, I had what seemed to be a toothache. This began a ritual of going back and forth between dentists and ear, nose and throat specialists, each saying I had a sinus infection and not a toothache or a toothache and not a sinus infection. After 3 years and 13 doctors and specialists, a root canal, extraction of a tooth and countless prescriptions for antibiotics, a dental specialist found a hairline fracture in the tooth that had actually been damaged by the car accident, which had allowed bacteria to enter my jawbone, cause an infection in the jawbone and a cyst to form in the adjacent sinus. I had to have oral surgery on my jawbone with no Novocaine (it would spread the infection) at 9:00 one night and then later, surgery to remove the cyst in my sinus, but my health issues continued.

Thinking that my health nightmare was finally over, I was devastated to find out over the next 20 years that my health was irreversibly ruined. Three doctors, two of whom were specialists and the last at the University of Pennsylvania hospital, confirmed a diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Immune Deficiency Syndrome and a systemic yeast infection from the overuse of the prescribed antibiotics. The doctor who performed the surgery on my sinus also performed a Caldwell Luc procedure which “opened up my sinus” and permanently altered the sinus in such a way that I cannot blow that sinus and I have had perhaps as many as a hundred sinus infections in that sinus since.

Out of a $10,000.00 settlement from the car accident, I got about $3,000.00 and out of that, I bought my first Polar heart rate monitor in 1986 - a Polar Vantage XL. That is what led me to become a Polar authorized dealer. At my worst, I was so weak that I had to sleep on the floor downstairs because I could not walk up a flight of stairs and obviously could not work. Even on a yeast and sugar free diet and the antifungal Diflucan to combat the systemic yeast infection, I only functioned at about 50%. Given my physical gifts and will, however, that was enough to lead a somewhat normal life. I became a personal trainer to have a healthy occupation (for many, many years I had managed a woodworking shop, but could no longer do the physical labor and it didn’t seem like a healthy occupation given my compromised immune system). I also started my www.howtobefit.com website to spread the gospel of fitness (a college aptitude test showed that I should be a brick layer or a minister, so helping others with their physical walk through life seemed just right).

As for running, it came back at times, (My last marathon in 1995, I ran the Philadelphia Independence Marathon again) but I would never know what to expect from my body which was constantly being battered by health issues. I basically lost all confidence in my running. My marriage also failed because my wife wanted me to be able to make more money, but I simply couldn’t. I moved to Albuquerque because New Jersey was too damp and the climate here is much better for my yeast issues and to run. I also needed to get away from a racing scene that I once dominated and which had become a source of embarrassment. I began personal training in earnest, as well as coaching running at the high school and club level. At first, I ran well here, but the arrhythmias (high heart rates when I was running) that I developed, became much more frequent. In fact in my first race here, the Albuquerque’s Finest Half Marathon, I had an arrhythmia at 5 miles walked to 6 miles, stopped for my heart rate to come down from over 200 and still ran 1:30:00. At the finish, I mentioned to a local doctor/runner that I had to walk because I had an arrhythmia and he scoffed, “If you had had an arrhythmia, you would be dead.” Runners don’t like to hear excuses or reasons and although I had a few very good races here, I began to avoid them. To this day, when I go to the track and can’t keep up, my peers trash talk me, but in defense of them, they don’t know why I am running so poorly because I refuse to make excuses. My challenge is for me to deal with, not complain about.

With my fitness websites and fitness blogs, I am fully committed to helping others in achieving their health and fitness goals. I sell Polar heart rate monitors because they will help people achieve their fitness and weight loss goals and I am a Million Dollar Body Coach so that I can coach and mentor people online to achieve the same goals. From 2001 to 2005, I ran 7 days a week without missing a day, and averaged almost a 10K a day. Then Grace came along and waking up in the night for feeding and so forth plus being a full time dad has really impacted my running (not to mention the additional effect of the second baby, Carly). Now I get up at 4:00 am to work, do a 30:00 - 45:00 strength workout at 4:45 am five days a week and then work and be with my children until 4:00 pm, when I go run. Although I run 7 days a week, sometimes that means just 1/2 a mile on a bad day, but I am thankful for that because many, many people with physical, weight and health challenges can’t do even that.

Even with five websites, it is quite a struggle to feed a family of five. But having lost mine, fitness and health are my passions and I will continue to persevere in spreading the “gospel” of fitness. I personally process and ship all orders and answer all of your phone calls and emails, so I know that you are getting the most security for your transactions and the most knowledgable recommendations and answers to your questions. I welcome any questions that you may have and always answer my emails and phone calls promptly.
