Being the Fat Kid Was All He Knew

Seth Epley said, “My entire life being the fat kid was the only thing I knew. Every action I took, every insecurity I had, was a result of my weight. People that haven’t been in this kind of situation don’t know how difficult life can be. Not just from a physical standpoint, but mentally as well. One day I simply decided enough was enough. I was 20 years old and straight up not enjoying life. It didn’t seem right to me. It was time to finally make a change – one I had wanted to make for as long as I could remember.

What did Seth do? He ordered P90X and on March 3, 2010, started his first workout.

From that first day I knew I was in for a lot of hard work. I honestly had doubts I would stick it out, but pushed them out of my head and told myself quitting wasn’t an option. It was incredibly tough at first. I was overwhelmed, but the fact that it was so hard for me is what pushed me. It turned out I had a competitive side I didn’t know existed. I wanted to prove to myself and others I could reach my goals – and surpass them.

Seth obliterated his goals. After 90 days he lost 50 pounds! From there he moved to Insanity, then did a hybrid of P90X and Insanity, completed The Asylum and most recently is busting through P90X2

“As far as I’m concerned there’s no limit to what I’m capable of. My life motto has become, “mind over all”. It’s more than words, it’s a lifestyle.”

How to schedule your P90X workouts if you don’t have the guide

Hey everybody, P90X auto-scheduling is back!  All you need to do is to join the Team Beachbody community (just like before) and you can go into WOWY and know exactly what to do for P90X Classic.  You can automatically schedule your complete Beachbody® workout program in the WOWY SuperGym®  (make sure P90X is in your library of workouts).  After you enter a start date and time, your Workout Calendar will tell you what to do each day for the complete length of your program.

In addition to the official workout schedules, which can also be found in your program guidebook, you’ll see some approved alternatives. If you want, you can try these as a change of pace or to add variety when doing a second or third round.

Who Can Do P90X

In addition to the post entitled, “Is P90X For You” I would like to offer my opinion as an older athlete with experience as a personal trainer and running coach. I would definitely read what it says and take the test to make sure that you are purchasing the right workout DVD and fitness plan for you. P90X is a real workout, with a real nutrition program that will both fuel your workouts and your goals – whether they are to get stronger and bigger or to lose weight and to get leaner. You won’t see P90X in WalMart and it is not for everyone. If you are obese, please choose another workout DVD from the selection that I provide. If you are older and have never worked out and are looking for something basic and not challenging, again, go to the list of workout programs and select one that best suits you, your current fitness and your fitness personality.

But if I can do P90X, then most other people can, too. In a couple of weeks, I will be 57 and although I run and years ago, I was a personal trainer, that doesn’t mean that I am some super fit freak who can just stand in front of a DVD player and whip out these workouts any more than I could win a marathon. But I look forward every morning to doing my workout and getting stronger and using that strength in all of my daily activities and my running.

Men and women, young and old can do P90X just like they could do another sport or activity if they put their mind to it. Any of the groups, for instance, who offer workouts for marathons, like Team in Training, don’t expect you to be able to run a marathon the day that you join. It is the goal of those that participate, just like doing all of the P90X workouts can be your goal. I didn’t start out by doing every minute of every workout and no one says that you have to (although if you expect results in 90 days, you need to do more than dabble in the workouts and be inconsistent in doing them). I started by doing portions of each workout before I went for a run. My second time doing P90X, which started on November 12 (I stopped doing P90X the first time at the end of August to focus more on my running), I am doing my P90X workout in the early morning and then running in the afternoon and it is going great.

Who can do P90X ? You can. Just like most people can run a 5K or ride a bike a certain distance, it is a matter of doing the workouts appropriately and building up over time with progressive adaption to train your body and prepare it for doing the activity, sport or event that you are training for. And if you are obese or sedentary, start with a different workout, lose weight, get in shape and you, too, will be able to do P90X eventually. It is the ultimate workout and worth making it a goal for just about everyone.

About the Author

It never occurred to me that at 56, P90X would be something that I couldn’t do. As a runner for over 40 years, physical challenges were never daunting, but merely required more training to accomplish them if at first I didn’t succeed. As a Million Dollar Body Coach, I knew that P90X was our “top of the line” product and so I purchased it, without knowing anything about it or even knowing that there was a Fit Test that you could take to determine whether you were up for the particular physical challenges that P90X provided. The price of $119.85 was never an issue because it is a 12 DVD set and there is a nutrition guide and fitness plan, so it seemed like a complete package. And anyway, as an ACE Certified Personal Trainer for many, many years, I had never purchased a workout DVD because I was the one creating my own workouts for my clients.

When the package arrived, I was at first struck by how professionally it was packaged (even a scene from one of the workouts is depicted inside the box), so I knew that the company was putting forth a lot of effort. The nutrition guide is actually a book and is not only a diet plan, but also provides delicious recipes which I have since tried and enjoyed. The fitness plan tells you what workouts to do on which days and you also have another option, which is to follow the plan which is created for you in WOWY. You have to remember that in March of this year when I purchased P90X, I was still learning about Million Dollar Body and WOWY and its enormous potential to direct you to achieving your fitness goals and to motivate you every step of the way, so I really hadn’t used WOWY much. I soon learned that anyone can log into WOWY and all that they need to do is be a Million Dollar Body Club member, which provides you with the most resources and guidance or just become a guest or “free player” which gives you full access WOWY (or, of course, you can log in as a coach, which I am). In all cases, once you log into WOWY, you can put in the workout DVD that you are doing and it creates a plan for you to follow and each time that you log in, you know which of the 12 (in the case of P90X) workouts that you are doing.

So, on March 28, 2007, I began using P90X workouts, loving them in every sense of the word and advocating them to a broad spectrum of people who are more physically able that they thought and who, with the help of P90X could create bodies that are significantly more capable of accomplishing every day tasks, stronger and visually more appealing. I now had a means to accomplish my own fitness goals and a way of further promoting the benefits of a fit and healthy lifestyle.

History of Howtobefit.com – My Untold Story

I am now telling my story for the first time for the sole purpose of trying to help others know that with will and perseverance you can achieve your fitness and health goals.

Prior to May 1985, I was super fit and super healthy, routinely running between 50 and 70 miles a week. Between March 16th and May 5th 1985, I ran 34:32 for 10K, 57:46 for 10 miles, 53:20 for 15K, 27:38 for 5 miles and 16:26 for 5K. I was 34 years old. On May 17, 1985, at around 5:00 pm on a Friday night, I was driving home with my then five year old daughter and we hit a van broadside. The van had been stopped in the left lane of a four lane road with its left blinker on and unexpectedly made a right turn out of the left lane directly in front of us. That accident, although we both survived, in an instant, ruined my health and changed my life. On Sunday, May 19th, I ran the Midland Run 15K (which I eventually ran or tried to run 13 years in a row) and ran 53:03.

The next day, Monday, I had what seemed to be a toothache. This began a ritual of going back and forth between dentists and ear, nose and throat specialists, each saying I had a sinus infection and not a toothache or a toothache and not a sinus infection. After 3 years and 13 doctors and specialists, a root canal, extraction of a tooth and countless prescriptions for antibiotics, a dental specialist found a hairline fracture in the tooth that had actually been damaged by the car accident, which had allowed bacteria to enter my jawbone, cause an infection in the jawbone and a cyst to form in the adjacent sinus. I had to have oral surgery on my jawbone with no Novocaine (it would spread the infection) at 9:00 one night and then later, surgery to remove the cyst in my sinus, but my health issues continued.

Thinking that my health nightmare was finally over, I was devastated to find out over the next 20 years that my health was irreversibly ruined. Three doctors, two of whom were specialists and the last at the University of Pennsylvania hospital, confirmed a diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Immune Deficiency Syndrome and a systemic yeast infection from the overuse of the prescribed antibiotics. The doctor who performed the surgery on my sinus also performed a Caldwell Luc procedure which “opened up my sinus” and permanently altered the sinus in such a way that I cannot blow that sinus and I have had perhaps as many as a hundred sinus infections in that sinus since.

Out of a $10,000.00 settlement from the car accident, I got about $3,000.00 and out of that, I bought my first Polar heart rate monitor in 1986 – a Polar Vantage XL. That is what led me to become a Polar authorized dealer. At my worst, I was so weak that I had to sleep on the floor downstairs because I could not walk up a flight of stairs and obviously could not work. Even on a yeast and sugar free diet and the antifungal Diflucan to combat the systemic yeast infection, I only functioned at about 50%. Given my physical gifts and will, however, that was enough to lead a somewhat normal life. I became a personal trainer to have a healthy occupation (for many, many years I had managed a woodworking shop, but could no longer do the physical labor and it didn’t seem like a healthy occupation given my compromised immune system). I also started my www.howtobefit.com website to spread the gospel of fitness (a college aptitude test showed that I should be a brick layer or a minister, so helping others with their physical walk through life seemed just right).

As for running, it came back at times, (My last marathon in 1995, I ran the Philadelphia Independence Marathon again) but I would never know what to expect from my body which was constantly being battered by health issues. I basically lost all confidence in my running. My marriage also failed because my wife wanted me to be able to make more money, but I simply couldn’t. I moved to Albuquerque because New Jersey was too damp and the climate here is much better for my yeast issues and to run. I also needed to get away from a racing scene that I once dominated and which had become a source of embarrassment. I began personal training in earnest, as well as coaching running at the high school and club level. At first, I ran well here, but the arrhythmias (high heart rates when I was running) that I developed, became much more frequent. In fact in my first race here, the Albuquerque’s Finest Half Marathon, I had an arrhythmia at 5 miles walked to 6 miles, stopped for my heart rate to come down from over 200 and still ran 1:30:00. At the finish, I mentioned to a local doctor/runner that I had to walk because I had an arrhythmia and he scoffed, “If you had had an arrhythmia, you would be dead.” Runners don’t like to hear excuses or reasons and although I had a few very good races here, I began to avoid them. To this day, when I go to the track and can’t keep up, my peers trash talk me, but in defense of them, they don’t know why I am running so poorly because I refuse to make excuses. My challenge is for me to deal with, not complain about.

With my fitness websites and fitness blogs, I am fully committed to helping others in achieving their health and fitness goals. I sell Polar heart rate monitors because they will help people achieve their fitness and weight loss goals and I am a Million Dollar Body Coach so that I can coach and mentor people online to achieve the same goals. From 2001 to 2005, I ran 7 days a week without missing a day, and averaged almost a 10K a day. Then Grace came along and waking up in the night for feeding and so forth plus being a full time dad has really impacted my running (not to mention the additional effect of the second baby, Carly). Now I get up at 4:00 am to work, do a 30:00 – 45:00 strength workout at 4:45 am five days a week and then work and be with my children until 4:00 pm, when I go run. Although I run 7 days a week, sometimes that means just 1/2 a mile on a bad day, but I am thankful for that because many, many people with physical, weight and health challenges can’t do even that.

Even with five websites, it is quite a struggle to feed a family of five. But having lost mine, fitness and health are my passions and I will continue to persevere in spreading the “gospel” of fitness. I personally process and ship all orders and answer all of your phone calls and emails, so I know that you are getting the most security for your transactions and the most knowledgable recommendations and answers to your questions. I welcome any questions that you may have and always answer my emails and phone calls promptly.
